![]() His dream became reality with the installment of the Peace Park, located in Alton Baker Park in Eugene, Oregon. In 2006 John founded the Nobel Peace Laureate Project, with the goal of creating a monument to honor Americans who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. They joined the First United Methodist Church of Eugene, and he was active in many volunteer organizations, including the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and the Eugene Round Table. In 1993 John and Harriet moved to Eugene, Oregon. John was active in many professional associations, such as the Western History Association, the National Council for the Social Studies, and the Council for History Education. He took a sabbatical year in 1972-73 at Simon Fraser University, and the family enjoyed spending the time in Burnaby, B.C., Canada. His teaching specialties were American Government, and AP U.S. Most of his career was spent at Gunn High School, but he also taught at Jordan Junior High School and Cubberley High School. He taught social studies in the Palo Alto Unified School District until his retirement in 1993. One of John’s army assignments was in California, and he enjoyed it so much that in 1965 the family moved to Palo Alto. John began teaching high school history and social studies at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, and in 1962, daughter Laura was born. He graduated from Wheaton High School in Illinois, received a bachelor's degree from DePauw University in 1958, and a master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1961. He married Harriet Jane Rinehart on June 12, 1959, in Waukegan, Illinois, and the couple settled in Brookfield, Illinois. John was born April 2, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois to Clare and Elsie Attig.
